A Movie Buff Nation

Poet Oscar Wilde once said, “Society exists only as a mental concept; in the real world there are only individuals.” How about in the reel world, where in the year 2159 people aren’t viewed as unique human beings, rather they’re lumped together as classes of people. The poor earth dwellers reside below the wealthy residents aboard the man-made space station known as “Elysium,” who perceive the earthbound not as noble individuals but as the doomed and deprived. Will they, with the help of Matt Damon and Jodie Foster, find a privileged spot at the box-office this weekend? Competing against high society and science fiction with “2 Guns” blazing are last week’s drug-busters Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg, hoping lightening strikes twice. It’s all relative for “We’re the Millers” with Jason Sudeikis and Jennifer Aniston dealing the drugs and doing comedic damage. Adding some color and G-rated innocence to all the R-rated fun, the “Smurfs 2” blue for blockbuster status are hoping to climb the colorful ladder to success their second week out to play. “The Conjuring,” meanwhile, plans on kicking their blue butts while scaring the rest of the competition. On the teen scene we have “Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters” intending to travel in monstrous, seaworthy style all the way to the top of the cinematic charts. The “Planes,” however, are coming in for a landing with the goal of sending their fellow movie characters on a flying leap. The razor-sharp “Wolverine” sees their kid-friendly smoke but feels up to the lofty challenge.
The real challenge, moviegoers know, is deciding on which movie to see first! Despite the intense competition, it’s shaping up to be a laidback weekend at the local multiplex, with something for everyone. After all, in our movie nation, all movie buffs are treated equally.
From seaside days to starry nights, August at the movies continues to be awesome in every way…
