A Robot Rises while Unfinished Business Flops

A sci-fi adventure was occurring at the movies this weekend, sending a robotic fellow named Chappie charging through the rest of the less-mechanical movie pack. A crime caper also captured the Focus of cold moviegoers, desperate to build a bigger Will Smith loving audience while solving the mystery of the much-sought after spring (from the comfort of a heated movie theater). As winter endlessly wanders on, we’ve learned that crime really does pay, as several of our box-office Top Five clearly indicate. Crime, of course, wasn’t the only game in town. Comedy, happily, had its say. We were (re)introduced to the British Dramedy The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, where guests were clamoring for second-to-none entertainment and law-abiding laughs. The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out of Water continued to amuse the animated lovers while the spy spoof Kingsman: The Secret Service has seen its share of cinematic profits. Of course, as all royalty knows, eventually that motion-picture torch must be passed on to the (less regal) newcomers.

Comedy, crime and a cutie named Chappie…Which of our winter tales made your weekend warmer?

#1 Chappie  $13.3 million

#2 Focus  $10 million

#3 The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel  $8.6 million

#4 Kingsman: The Secret Service  $8.3 million

#5 The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water $6.7 million
