Movie Travels Beneath the Stars

“Write it on your heart that every day is the best day of the year.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

What will the new year bring? Is it written in stone that it will be filled with heartfelt stories along with hilarious as well as horrifying situations? Will our “best days of the year” include a trip, via our local movie theater, to a make-believe land where characters magically come to life?

Wherever you found yourself this first weekend of 2016, perhaps it included some of those imaginative places and magical moments, where, by sheer force of lingering holiday goodwill, the stars continued to align, led once again by Star Wars: The Force Awakens, still gloriously outshining its stellar but less starry competition. Daddy’s Home was once again a nice place to visit, where Sisters completed a dysfunctional movie family (making our own relatives almost normal but not nearly as amusing). Quentin Tarantino’s hostile crew within The Hateful Eight were ironically feeling eight times the love as both peril and profits arrived at their western-style door, while Joy, decidedly less busy, found success bittersweet. With our younger movie demographic still on holiday break, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip proved to be an entertaining, if not educational way to travel.

Which of our entertaining characters did you meet along your travels this holiday weekend?

Estimated Domestic Box Office Results:

  1. Star Wars: The Force Awakens $88.3 million.
  2. Daddy’s Home $29 million.
  3. The Hateful Eight $16.24 million.
  4. Sisters $12.58 million.
  5. Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip $11.8 million.
