An Emoji-Packed Weekend

Expect an emotional weekend at the movies, as emotion-personified THE EMOJI MOVIE promises to make moviegoers of all ages laugh and cry while experiencing every story-inspired emotion in between. Of course, the DESPICABLE ME: 3 gang, dastardly beings they are, are hoping to make those emojis cry in defeat. Who will charm our youngest moviegoers?
Refusing to be defeated, VALERIAN AND THE CITY OF A THOUSAND PLANETS are counting thousands of ways to keep audiences entertained while the WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES (and movie lovers’ attention) rages on.
Unfortunately for them, last week’s champion DUNKIRK is still in fighting form, but can he once again win the ultimate battle?
As the summer blockbuster season rolls on, might scrappy SPIDERMAN: HOMECOMING have a fighting chance at a box-office comeback?
If animation and those in need of anger management isn’t really your thing, perhaps A GIRLS’ TRIP to your friendly, neighborhood movie theater will be more to your movie liking. Speaking of girl power, the ATOMIC BLONDE, while new to the scene, just might have the power to solve the mystery of the quickly-fading days of summer.
Before our summer stories fade into the sunset, which of our likeable tales will be worth the trip to an emotion-packed movie theater for you this weekend?

The War of a Thousand

The boys of DUNKIRK won the cinematic war this weekend at the domestic box office, but, gentlemen that they are, left plenty of room in the movie world for those who preferred a GIRLS’ TRIP to a gory battle.
For those looking for a hero in the hood, SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING offered a pleasant summer break while those still in fighting form found the WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES entertaining in a war-of-a-totally-different kind of way. Finally, VALERIAN AND THE CITY OF A THOUSAND PLANETS claimed thousands of earthbound moviegoers.
The box-office battle brought out the fighting spirit in our complex characters this weekend, a girl-fueled trip inspired many tagalongs, a youthful hero was once again honored and a city of a thousand charmed millions.
Which of our “honorable” tales charmed you this weekend?

Estimated Domestic Box Office Results:

1. Dunkirk $50.5 million.
2. Girls’ Trip $30.4 million.
3. Spider-Man: Homecoming $22 million.
4. War for the Planet of the Apes $20.4 million.

A Battle of a Thousand Planets Begins

So many planetary beings to choose from, so little movie time! We’ve got WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES naturally kicking cinematic butt last week but what will life in our imaginative planet bring this weekend? Might VALERIAN AND THE CITY OF A THOUSAND PLANETS be the town to beat? Are those dark forces, clearly not as friendly as SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING strong enough to kick a neighborhood legend to the curb?
Of course, the DESPICABLE ME: 3 gang are not above a bit of friendly rivalry as they vow to do whatever it takes (PG style) to maintain their time in the spotlight. Driving at lightning speed in his preferred getaway vehicle, the BABY DRIVER fights to stay in his spotlighted lane, feeling THE BIG SICK that only entertaining competition can bring.
It being summer, a GIRLS’ TRIP might have moviegoers taking to the road leading to their local movie theater, where, depending on how far the girls travel, they may cross paths with the boys from DUNKIRK fresh from their World War II battle. Are they ready for that brutal box-office battle awaiting them?
Who will win the war this weekend?

The Apes Eclipse

The WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES (and moviegoers’ attention) took many prisoners/fans this weekend, as the “humans” united for an all-out warfare. Feeling a bit conflicted by his demotion to a slightly-less profitable locale, SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING remained a welcomed addition to the cinematic neighborhood while the unfriendly DESPICABLE ME: 3 was still despicably delightful. The BABY DRIVER kept to his own successful lane while THE BIG SICK left moviegoers queasy but quite entertained.
As the Summer of 2017 sped by, the neighborhood remained friendly despite that whole humans-versus-apes war occurring throughout the movie planet. On earthly terrain, animation continued to be a crowd pleaser as the getaway to a successful vacation for the older crowd led to a sickeningly entertaining stopover.
Which of our entertaining tales led to a successful weekend for you?

Estimated Domestic Box Office Results:
1.The War for the Planet of the Apes $56.5 million.
2. Spider-Man: Homecoming $45.2 million.
3. Despicable Me: 3 $18.9 million.
4. Baby Driver $8.8 million.
5. The Big Sick $7.6 million.

Wars and Wonders

Why can’t we all just get along? Perhaps those involved in the never-ending WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES may be asking that very question this competitive weekend in the land of movies. Will they be winning the battle at the box office? Might SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING be what weary travelers are seeking this weekend, fresh off a trip to the beach, where the BABY DRIVER attempted to steer them to the local movie theater (for a story ironically not made for the young crowd?) Of course, a homey visit with the DESPICABLE ME: 3 crew might be more to our laid-back liking as a carefree summer day competes with the many mechanics involved in creating TRANSFORMERS: THE LAST KNIGHT, who’s still bummed he’s not first on moviegoers’ vacation-plagued minds.
Then there’s everyone’s longtime favorite WONDER WOMAN, who let’s face it, isn’t entirely dressed for a day at the beach. How much longer will movie lovers find the wonder in her?
Luckily, it’s a season filled with wonderful twists, complete with apes and animation and heroes in all shapes and sizes.
Which of our twisted tales will produce the most wonder for you this weekend?

A Blockbuster Homecoming

The neighborhood got a lot friendlier this weekend, greeting SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING with the warmest welcome at the domestic box office. Far from hospitable, the DESPICABLE ME 3 gang felt right at home, basking in their despicable glory and far-from dreadful success. Seeking his own form of success, BABY DRIVER showed little sign of stopping on his getaway to fame and fortune.
TRANSFORMERS: THE LAST KNIGHT, meanwhile, was not ready to finalize his knightly stay in royal Hollywood with WONDER WOMAN still happily holding court.
Our majestic Hollywood stars, both real and animated, proved their staying power this sultry summer weekend, as an iconic hero was welcomed home, Gru gained even more family, um fans and a baby-faced driver took the wheel while a transformative war waged on!
Which of our warring characters brought the most heat to movie theaters this weekend?

Estimated Domestic Box Office Results:
1. Spider-Man: Homecoming $117 million.
2. Despicable Me 3 $34 million.
